The location of The Baron in the Trees
The medieval villages of Apricale and Perinaldo are connected by an ancient mule track that crosses the Merdanzo stream, whose name could derive from the practice of using its waters to macerate hemp, flax and broom (as reported by the Statutes of Apricale of 1267 (cit. Just along its waters, Baron Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò used to do his own needs, perched on an alder, in the novel The Baron in the Trees – Il Barone Rampante by Italo Calvino.
